Why Your Executive Resume isn't Landing

You've built a real career. You’ve led teams, driven results, and made things happen. So why does sending out your resume feel like shouting into a void? Here's the thing… In most cases, it's not your experience that's the problem. Frustratingly, it’s how that experience is showing up on the page and being heard by hiring teams.

The hiring process looks a lot different than it did even five years ago, or even five months ago. With enhanced Application Tracking Systems (ATS) and AI incorporated into hiring processes, resumes are getting screened faster, filtered harder, and evaluated by people (or tools) that are moving quickly. Most senior professionals are still working from a template, whether literally or mentally, that made sense and delivered results a decade ago. The market has moved and your resume needs to move with it.

The most common issue we see is resumes that describe what someone did, but not what it meant. Aka, they’re missing that “so what?” factor. There's a big difference between 'managed a regional sales team' and 'rebuilt an underperforming team that went on to exceed quota for six consecutive quarters.' One reads like a line from a job description. The other is a story that makes a hiring manager lean in and want to know more.

Experienced professional frustrated that his executive resume isn't landing responses from hiring managers.

When you've spent time on the hiring side, you start to notice patterns — the resumes that get passed around the table, and the ones that get passed over. It's rarely about credentials and it is almost always about clarity. A good resume review isn't a proofreading exercise – there are tools for that. It's asking: does this document make a hiring team want to hear more from this person?

So why isn't your executive resume landing? If you've been putting in the effort and not seeing the results, it might just be time for a second opinion from someone who's been on the other side of the table. That's exactly what we do. Check out our Services for more details on how we can get your candidacy to the Top of the Stack.
