So often we are told by senior leaders that their ‘impact is hard to measure’ and their work is not easily quantifiable. Honestly? There are times when that’s true. More often, though, it’s a blindspot. The work feels too big, too complex, or too collaborative to distill into a number… but that’s still exactly the exercise hiring teams are expecting you to do. It can be challenging, but knowing how to quantify leadership impact on your resume is a key differentiator between you and other candidates.

Senior leader working with a recruiter to learn how to quantify leadership impact on their executive resume.

The higher up you are, the more your resume needs to show scale and outcome, not just activity or job duties. At the senior and executive level, everyone in the candidate pool has led teams, managed budgets, and driven initiatives. What separates the candidates who get calls back is specificity. Numbers and outcomes create scale. They give a hiring manager something concrete to hold onto, and that just matters more at the senior level. ‘Grew revenue’ is forgettable. ‘Grew revenue 40% YoY while cutting CAC by 20%’ is a conversation starter.

Start simple by asking yourself a few questions: What was the size of the team, budget, or portfolio you owned? What changed under your leadership, and how much and why? What did you inherit, and what did you leave behind? Even directional numbers help. You probably have more data than you think; ‘reduced turnover significantly’ becomes a lot stronger as ‘reduced turnover by 20% in 18 months’. You can find your numbers, even when they aren’t obvious.

And yes, some impact really is hard to put a number on. So what do you do when you genuinely can’t quantify? There are ways to convey impact without hard numbers through scope, scale, and stakes. Shifting a culture, rebuilding trust after a rough chapter, navigating a team through major change. When that’s the case, lean into scope and stakes. ‘Led a cross-functional restructuring across 6 business units during a period of significant organizational change’ paints a picture even without a percentage or other hard numbers attached.

Quantifying your impact is one of the hardest parts of writing your own resume, but one of the highest-leverage things you can do.
