Can You Do Your Job Search for Free With AI? What You Should Know First

These days, you can do a lot of your job search for free with AI. Resume feedback, interview practice, company research, and keyword analysis are all a few prompts away. Plenty of people are getting value from those resources, and we would rather tell you that plainly than pretend otherwise. The harder question, though, is whether free tools give you everything you need to land the role you want.

What a DIY search can look like

A DIY search leveraging AI can cover many of the standard job search tasks these days. Job seekers paste a job description next to their resume and ask what’s missing, research a company before a call, and draft outreach to people they want to meet. Others keep a simple spreadsheet of every application to see which roles respond, and fill in the gaps with free articles, webinars, and templates on resumes, networking, and salary negotiation.

Where information stops being the bottleneck

Much of what you need to know about resumes, interviews, and networking is already published somewhere. What takes longer to figure out is which advice applies to your background, your target roles, and the way a hiring team will read you. A tool answers the question you ask, but it has no way of knowing which question you should have asked.

That matters more as AI-assisted applications multiply. In 2024 research from CV Genius in the UK, 74% of hiring managers said they can spot an AI-written application and 80% said they dislike AI-generated resumes and cover letters. Robert Half reported this spring that 67% of HR leaders say AI-generated applications are slowing down their hiring. When everyone has the same tools, the results come down to judgment: what to emphasize, what to leave out, and how to keep your own voice in the room.
